Selena
She broke down barriers within the world of music as a singer, performer as well as a designer. She was Mexican-American, but still traditional. She was the first to bring Tejano into the mainstream of music. The tragic loss of her life shattered her growing popularity and, as often happens when a glowing, charming singer dies too young, it caused many to grieve every potential that was not fully realized. To prevent her successes from going unnoticed many of her fans in these past few years have been motivated to go further. The death of Selena triggered emotion in Latino society that could be similar in a way to Elvis Presley, and John Lennon. Selena was an extremely popular Latino performer across North America. Her music transcended the boundaries of culture and inspired both young people and older adults. Selena may have been hailed by certain people as a Latina Madonna, but she is still a great example to follow. Selena's family values off stage and involvement in AIDS awareness programs are exemplary.
