Courtney Shanade Salter, aka Ari Lennox, was born in Washington, D.C. on March 26th in 1991. She is an American artist and songwriter, as well as the first artist signed by J. Cole to his record label Dreamville Records. Dreamville Records released her debut EP titled Pho in October of 2016 when she began to get recognition. Shea Butter Baby is her debut album. It came out in May 2019. Ari Lennox began uploading her music onto the internet back in 2012 after she launched her debut mixtape Five Finger Discount and debut EP Ariography, in 2013. She continued to upload her tracks online through 2014 and released her own single Bound. She appeared in Omen's Elephant Eyes as well as on Sweat It Out on July 21 the 21st of July, 2015. J. Cole had her sing her songs to the Dreamville Team in the following year because he was hoping for Rihanna to be able work together on a few references.
